Malik Sarwar Sultanus Sharq

Malik Sarwar Sultanus Sharq
(?-1399)
Malik Sarwar, the founder of the Sharqi dynasty, was appointed governor in 1394 of the eastern province of Jaunpur by Sultan Mahmud Shah Tughlaq (1394-1412). He succeeded in subjugating the local chiefs of Jaunpur as well as the Doab region up to the confines of Delhi, which earned him the title Malikus Sharq (Ruler of the East). Taking advantage of the collapse of the central authority following Timur's invasion (1398), Malik Sarwar came to rule at Jaunpur in an independent capacity. Af-ter his death in 1399, his son and successor Malik Karanfal declared himself a sultan with the title Mubarak Shah Sharqi.
